National Day of Prayer

Today is the 59th annual observance of prayer in our nation. This year’s theme is “Prayer for such a time as this.” The key verse is Nahum 1:7 which states: “The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.”

This year’s program was not without controversy, as lawsuits were filed to stop the prayer meeting. The Obama administration was the defendant in the case, arguing for the continuation of the National Day of Prayer. This was due largely to President Obama’s role in enforcing the statute by issuing a proclamation each year.

Obama’s position stated that the statute is simply the “acknowledgement of the role of religion in American life.”

With this freedom still intact, I urge everyone to participate in some way. There are thousands of events across our nation and suggest you find one near you.
